Adam knew his wife again: for knew see verse 1. Adam occurs here without the article and so is a proper noun. Bore a son and called his name follow the birth formula. It is Eve who names Seth.

For she said: for introduces the reason Eve gave this son the name Seth. That reason is contained in the sentence that Eve spoke, “God has appointed … slew him.” In order to make clear the connection between the name Seth and what Eve said, it is essential to explain this name in a note, as in Good News Translation. Note that New Revised Standard Version also explains this name in its footnote: “The verb in Heb resembles the word for Seth.”

The quotation God has appointed for me another child is a happy cry of considerable emotion. The Hebrew is literally “For God has given me another seed.” Appointed translates a Hebrew verb meaning “to give, set, place” and whose sound is similar to the name Seth.

For Cain slew him: this clause can often be joined to the previous clause, as in Good News Translation “whom Cain killed.”
